There is a lot to do, but we are in no hurry. All things in due time. I couldn't wait to show you the inside. So done or not, here it goes...

This is the living room. I love the marble lamp with the rose shade. A flea market find that was owned by the manager.... and she said it wasn't for sale.

The dining room. What do you think? Paint or don't paint the walls. This is not the cottage look that I was going for, but I don't want to paint the walls and then regret it.

The kitchen. The floor is not old, it's retro.

Homemaking is the traditional and well-established practice of maintaining and managing the home. Tradition has ascribed this role to women, who have chosen to undertake their domestic duties, such as childrearing, cooking, cleaning, education, etc. These tasks are demanding and require much skill to do well, thus a homemaker should be accorded respect for her superb performance. Homemaking is usually a full-time job, though several admirable women have managed to juggle homemaking with a successful career. Homemaking is the natural counterpart of breadwinning and these are the traditional gender roles in successful marriages. Homemakers are important in raising children in a loving environment because they are there to give the children the stimulating attention they need in their formative years.

Homemaking- A Lost Art?

Because I was blessed to spend so much time with my grandmother, homemaking skills has become a part of my heritage. I am grateful for my 'traditional skills'. I can sew quite well (even making up my own patterns), crochet, knit (although not well), can veggies or jam, bake my own bread, quilt (both tied and hand-stitched), etc. Through the years I’ve even made my own soap, hooked rugs, embroidered, cross-stitched, redecorated the worst of homes and transformed them into a confortable home (most of the time, on a dime).

Many of my friends are surprised by my ability in these traditional arts/crafts. But for me it seems like second nature to whip up a homemade pie, make cinnamon rolls from scratch, or sew a quick costume for one of my kids’ school activities.

I wonder if the younger generation of women are learning these crafts? They don’t seem to teach them in (except for learning how to bake brownies or rice crispie treats) and they have very few, if any, classes in these areas at I suspect that the younger generation of women have never sewn a dress or preserved veggies.

In some ways I mourn the loss of such skills, even as I realize that they are unnecessary in today’s world. What do you think? Do you think that girls should be learning to cook and knit during their teen years? Are we missing out on an important part of our heritage when we don’t teach traditional homemaking skills?

We Are In the House

Finally we are settled in. It is starting to feel like home. Of course there is so much to do, but we are in no hurry. All in due time. I have learned that if I wait for the things that we need I will eventually find exactly what I am looking for, be happier with it in the long term, and often times find it for less. I am committed to simplicity all the way.

This is the front of the home with a view of the beginning stages of my flower garden.

The back yard. There are pecan trees, a magnolia bush and a lemon tree.

My beloved eucalyptus tree in the front yard.

The side of the house is lined with butterfly bushes.

We Are Moving In

I started the day so excited to get into our new home and get busy. It was not long before it all became overwhelming. All of the cupboards were cleaned and shelf paper was added. All of the carpet and padding was removed from one of the bedrooms. What a relief that the hardwood flooring underneath is beautiful.

After returning to the apartment I made a complete job of cleaning the cupboards and stovetop. I will take pictures of the progress.

We are going to closing a week from today. I am starting to feel a little anxiety since I have still not found affordable movers. Oh, how I wish my husband had a little bit of time to help us through the move. It looks like we may be bringing our thing to our new home w/ horse and buggy.

This is both an exciting tome to be a homemaker, and a difficult one. Our family will be moving very soon into our new home. From the time that we entered into contract to purchase the home until the closing date was said to be only 2+ weeks. I was so excited to hear that from our mortgage company, however, it does seem like such a small amount of time to prepare. We are just waiting for a closing date so that we can make the final arrangements. While many of the things that make a home pretty and feminine are packed in boxes and there is little left of my cozy apartment. I am still committed to educating the children, keeping house and preparing beautiful meals. I am setting out to find a moving company today.

We are planning on moving into the house this month.
